Translating an abstract concept of beauty in an attention-grabbing graphic for an opinion piece can be challenging. Anya Garibashvily collaborated with Molly Parker, the writer of the opinion, on what Parker had in mind for the graphic. Together, the two came up with the idea of a scale’s screen being covered with a post-it note conveying the message of weight not equaling beauty. It was up to Garibashvily to decide what the perspective would be and what details to implement into the graphic. When illustrating graphics for an article, it’s important to remember that certain details and pieces of the illustration could lend itself to editorialization or the wrong message being conveyed. Garibashvily checked in with Parker multiple times to make sure the proper message was being conveyed during this graphic’s progress.
